ESSIC Visiting Assistant Research Scientist Alejandro Egido recently won the prestigious and highly competitive NOAA Dave Johnson Award, given annually to recognize the achievements of young professionals who have shown outstanding innovation in the use of satellite data for operational environmental applications. This award has been previously won by another ESSIC scientist, Scott Rudlosky.
Egido, who works primarily in the SOCD Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry, was recognized specifically for developing Fully-Focused Synthetic Aperture Radar altimetry, a novel analytic technique that dramatically improves the along-track resolution of a new generation of high-rate satellite radar altimeters. These achievements pave the way for new applications in operational ice thickness monitoring, inland water level measurement, and marine weather forecasting.
In addition to his work with ESSIC and the Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry, Egido serves as the NOAA Jason Measurement System Engineer and is employed by Global Science & Technology, Inc. Prior to joining NOAA, he worked at Starlab Barcelona.
The award will be presented during the National Space Club’s annual Robert H. Goddard Memorial Dinner on March 20, 2019 at the Washington Hilton.
