NOAA20 and S-NPP VIIRS Land Surface Temperature Product Validation and Inter-Comparison

NOAA20 satellite

ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientists Yuling Liu, Peng Yu, and Heshun Wang are co-authors on a paper titled “NOAA20 and S-NPP VIIRS Land Surface Temperature Product Validation and Inter-Comparison” alongside Yunyue Yu, scientist at NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research.

The study presents the validation of the two Land Surface Temperature (LST) products: the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard both NOAA 20 (N20) and the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite. The validation results present a similarly close agreement between ground observations and satellite estimations from both N20 and S-NPP VIIRS LST products.

Liu received her B.S. in geography from Beijing Normal University, China in 1999, M.S. in Remote Sensing and GIS from Peking University, China in 2002 and Ph.D. in urban engineering from Kyoto University, Japan in 2010. Her research interests include satellite data retrieval algorithms and validation, land surface model and data assimilation, and environmental data product applications.

Yu got his B.S. and M.S. in oceanography from the Ocean University of China, and received his Ph.D. in physical oceanography from the Florida State University.  His work interests include satellite data retrieval algorithms and validation, numerical modeling and data assimilation, satellite and in-situ observations and their application in geosciences and costal oceanography.  He is currently working on Land Surface Temperature product retrieval algorithm development and improvement.

Wang got his B.S. in Geographic Information System from the Jilin University of China, and received his Ph.D. in Cartography and Geographic Information System from the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Science. His research interests include estimation of land surface variables from remote sensing data, land surface parameters modeling.
