Last week, it was announced that ESSIC / CICS-MD Visiting Research Scientist Tom Smith and ESSIC / CICS-MD Visiting Associate Research Scientist Ralph R. Ferraro will be receiving The Department of Commerce Bronze Medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed by the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere that marks outstanding contributions to the efficiency and effectiveness of their operating unit.
Smith, who is also a physical scientist in Satellite Applications and Research/NESDIS/NOAA, will receive this award for innovation on sea surface temperature construction methods that enable improved El Niño structures and long-term record consistency. Ferraro, Chief of the NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Climate Studies Branch, and his team receive the award for developing the operational GCOM-W1 AMSR2 product system.
Smith and Ferraro will be recognized at a formal ceremony held at NOAA’s Silver Spring headquarters on May 14th. To read about past awardees, see the Office of Human Capital Services website here.
