On January 20-21, University of Maryland’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) successfully hosted its third annual Scientists Serving Communities workshop, bringing together over 200 researchers and community leaders from across Maryland to advance climate resilience through collaboration, dialogue, and shared learning.

The University of Maryland today awarded $30 million to 50 projects through its Grand Challenges Grants Program, an institution-wide initiative to tackle major societal issues.
The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) received 16 Grand Challenges grants, five of which include ESSIC scientists.
The University of Maryland ranked No. 12 among U.S. public institutions and No. 57 among top universities from nearly 100 countries in U.S. News & World Report’s list of 2022-23 Best Global Universities.
ESSIC Associate Director Ralph Ferraro is a member of the new Professional Track (PTK) Working Group, a committee composed of PTK and Tenure Track (TTK) faculty, staff and administrators on behalf of Provost Jennifer King Rice to review and assess current issues related to PTK faculty. The goal of the Working Group is to develop a report of recommendations to Provost Rice on PTK issues.
He will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center.
ESSIC/CISESS Research Scientist Isaac Moradi has been elected to the University State Senate as one of the Professional-Track Faculty members. The University Senate, composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators, is one of the largest and most influential governing bodies at the University of Maryland. As a member of the senate, Moradi will help advise the University President on campus policy matters and concerns, including education, budget, personnel, campus-community, long range plans, facilities, and faculty, staff and student affairs.
Distinguished University Professor James Farquhar has been named the chair of the University of Maryland’s Department of Geology for five years, effective July 1, 2021. Farquhar holds a joint appointment at ESSIC and is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Farquhar succeeds Richard Walker, who served as department chair since 2016.
The Dashboard for Agricultural Water Use and Nutrient Management (DAWN) launched its website today. This marks the latest development of the UMD led project to provide farmers and water managers across the Corn Belt with the most relevant and reliable information for farm-level decision-making.
