Busalacchi Featured in Terpvision Episode on new NOAA Center

In the eighth installment of the UMD-produced video news program, “TerpVision,” the series featured a segment on the newly opened NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) at the M-Square Research Park, with commentary by ESSIC Director and Professor Antonio Busalacchi.

The report provided an overview of the technology and resources available at the new NCWCP facility, the types of research it will support, and how its proximity to the UMD campus and M-Square organizations like ESSIC will facilitate colloborative research.

In the segment, Busalacchi described how the NCWCP’s relocation to M-Square not only enables direct interaction by UMD faculty and students with NOAA scientists and resources, but also establishes a previously unprecedented hub for earth sciences.

“With the move of the NOAA center for Weather and Climate Prediction to the M-Square campus here at the University of Maryland, we now have the largest concentration of earth environmental scientists anywhere in the world, tackling the state of Maryland’s problems, the nation’s problems, and the world’s problems.” Busalacchi said.

In an example of the new found “organizational accessibility,” Busalacchi noted how ESSIC and NOAA offices were previously separated by distances of up to 20 miles, but now immediate face-to-face collaborations between agency scientists are merely a parking lot stroll away.

The segment also provided a brief glimpse of the building’s ribbon cutting ceremony, with dedication comments by UMD President, Dr. Wallace D. Lo.
